The Shih Tzu, meaning "lion dog" in Mandarin, is a royal companion born in Chinese imperial palaces over a thousand years ago. With over 75 active listings in Quebec, it remains one of the province’s most sought-after companion dogs. Weighing 9 to 16 pounds and standing about 10 inches, the Shih Tzu charms with its gentle expression and cascading luxurious coat available in all colours.
Bred for one purpose — to be an exceptional companion — the Shih Tzu excels at its role. Its temperament is remarkably balanced: affectionate without being clingy, playful without being hyperactive. Unlike some toy breeds, it is generally friendly with everyone — children, strangers, other dogs, and cats. For residents of Montreal, Laval, and Gatineau, its compact size makes it perfect for condo and apartment living.
The Shih Tzu’s coat is beautiful but demanding — daily brushing in full length, or a convenient "puppy cut" with groomer visits every 6 to 8 weeks. During Quebec winters, its small size and brachycephalic muzzle make it vulnerable to cold — a warm coat and booties are essential. Summer heat sensitivity also requires caution and air conditioning.
For adoption in Canada, choose CKC-certified breeders who test for eye conditions, renal dysplasia, and patellar luxation. Avoid "imperial" or "teacup" designations. Browse our dog listings on QuebecAnnonce and visit the Canadian Kennel Club.
