The English Setter: Sporting Elegance in Quebec
The English Setter is considered one of the most beautiful pointing dogs in the world. Developed in England over 400 years ago for bird hunting, this breed combines unmatched athletic grace with a gentle, friendly temperament. Its elegant silhouette, silky speckled coat (called "belton"), and fluid movement turn heads in Montreal and Quebec City parks.
The unique belton pattern comes in blue belton (black and white), orange belton, lemon belton, liver belton, and tricolour. The medium-length, flat, silky coat with feathering requires regular brushing two to three times weekly.
Gentleness and Energy in Harmony
Often called the "gentleman" of gun dogs, the English Setter has a remarkably gentle, affectionate, and sociable temperament. It gets along wonderfully with children, other dogs, and even cats when socialized young. However, this is an athlete needing vigorous daily exercise — at least an hour of running, hiking, or field work. The trails of Quebec’s Laurentians and Mauricie offer perfect playgrounds.
Facing Quebec’s Seasons
The English Setter’s coat offers moderate protection against Quebec winters. It enjoys outdoor activities in cold weather, though very low temperatures require shorter outings. For adoption in Canada, choose CKC-registered breeders who test for hip and elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness, and thyroid issues. Browse our dog listings and visit the Canadian Kennel Club.
