Mixed breed dogs, also known as mutts or crossbreeds, represent a significant portion of dogs available for adoption in Quebec. With over 685 active listings, these unique companions often offer a surprising combination of qualities inherited from their various lineages. Across Quebec, from Montreal to Gatineau and Laval, mixed breeds are among the most sought-after pets by Canadian families.
One of the main advantages of mixed breed dogs is what’s called hybrid vigor. By combining genes from different breeds, these dogs often show better resistance to hereditary diseases that affect purebreds. Veterinary studies conducted in Canada have shown that mixed breeds live on average one to two years longer than their purebred counterparts.
Every mixed breed dog is truly one of a kind. Their size, coat, colour and temperament vary considerably from one individual to another. A crossbreed might inherit the intelligence of a Border Collie, the gentleness of a Labrador and the hardiness of a Husky — a perfect combination for Quebec’s harsh winters. Shelters across Quebec, such as the Montreal SPCA, evaluate each animal’s temperament before adoption.
QuebecAnnonce connects you with individuals, foster families and animal shelters throughout Quebec. Before adopting, ask the right questions about health history, vaccinations and energy level. The Canadian Kennel Club recommends always meeting the animal in person before making your decision. A mixed breed deserves just as much love as a purebred — and will return it tenfold.
