The Bulldog, whether French or English, has become one of the most popular breeds worldwide, and Quebec follows this trend enthusiastically. With 272 active listings on QuebecAnnonce, the Bulldog is among the most sought-after dogs for adoption in Quebec. Its popularity is particularly strong in urban centres like Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and Gatineau, where its compact size and calm temperament make it an ideal apartment companion.
The French Bulldog (8-14 kg) with its bat ears and the English Bulldog (18-25 kg) with its undershot jaw both share a gentle, affectionate and sometimes comically lazy temperament. Both are brachycephalic breeds with important health considerations for Quebec’s climate.
The Bulldog is the ultimate indoor dog with modest exercise needs — two short 20-30 minute walks daily. In summer, Quebec heat waves pose a real danger. In winter, Bulldogs manage cold better than heat, but a coat is needed for extended outings in Montreal or Gatineau. Avoid prolonged exposure below -15°C.
The Bulldog is unfortunately prone to many health issues: brachycephalic syndrome, skin allergies, joint problems, disc herniation and eye problems. It’s absolutely crucial to choose a breeder registered with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) who selects breeders with well-opened nostrils and complete health testing. Beware of "exotic" colours (blue, lilac, merle) sold at premium prices — these are often associated with additional health problems. With a responsible breeder and proper care, a Bulldog can live 10 to 13 years in Quebec.
